In 2013, the NCAA made $770 million dollars from the NCAA tournament, a three week basketball tournament to determine the national champion of college basketball (D’Alessandro). Not a single player playing in this tournament did not see a single cent of this revenue. Many analysts and people in the sports business have debated on if college athletes should be paid. With the growth of collegiate sports, the NCAA should pay their athletes a percentage of their profit because the athletes are the reason why the NCAA make a profit, and college athletes have to work hard to maintain their studies and their physical fitness. According to the official NCAA website, 11 percent of the NCAA’s yearly revenue is off championships that student athletes participate in. However, 81% of the revenue comes off of television rights that televise sporting events, such as the Final Four. If the NCAA is going to make money off of these players playing in these events, then the NCAA needs to start paying them. For example, if you worked on a project in class, but you got no credit for it, then you would be irate. This feeling is how the athletes feel currently. They work hard, and play in these games, but do not get any reward for their hard work. They also say that they have tutors and people that help them get better grades, that regular students do not have. These reasons are both true, however scholarships are only for school, and they are not for personal benefits, which might be the reason why the athletes need this money that they are asking for. Also, tutors are given to these students to help them get their grades up. However, with the amount of traveling that these student athletes do, they need tutors to help them.
