The topic on whether to pay or not to pay the college athlete has been a matter of debate for a time now. Each and every child dreams of becoming a star in future. The career that stands out well is being a professional athlete. Today, college athletes spend their own time showcasing their talents on local and national programs. There are some people who support the debate while others are against it. Those who support it, argue that student- athletes should be paid because the athletes spend much of their time practicing, and at the same time they require money to pay for their school fees. The athletic department serves as the main source of cash flow. Athletics create million of dollars for the school they represent and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) .If the athletic department is separated from a college and treated as a company, it can be able to compete with other big companies in the industry. So, what is the problem when the most important body in the machine- the player- is being paid some money for his or her training as well as participation? The answer lies with the NCAA which keeps all the money for future use. College athletes deserve a pay for their upkeep while in college as well as their participation and teamwork fee because these sports can help them make more money for the rest of their life. For example, a deal of $10.8 billion was reached between CBS/Turner Sport and the NCAA for a period of thirteen years. In this deal, we are talking about $11 billion for only three weekends of television annually. Athletes do a lot of training and not all students are able to play the game. Some argue that they should not be paid because they are just amateurs and if paid, they will become professional players. Having the student-athletes spend their time in the classroom and in the field playing, how many of them will get a job? However, some claim that they are being given a scholarship, but it does not cover everything. This is evident especially when the college athletes cannot afford to bring their parents to the stadium to watch their children while playing. With all the publicity and respect, these athletes get, it evidently noticeable that are almost near the poverty line. The NCAA has continuously claimed that the athletes should not be paid because they will not do well in their studies. Nevertheless, if everyone looks at the future of these players, one can tell that these people should be paid for every minute they spend playing for the college because not many of them are sure they will get a job. In addition, they spend most of their time; practicing and at times they spend sometimes out of school because of these sports.
