College athletes provoke millions of dollars of earnings for the NCAA (Block). Attending college is a big change for the students. Learning to be independent and living off of your own wage is something that doesn’t come and go easily. Plus, having no time to get a job to earn anything must be hard. The hard topic to grasp is why the college athletes don’t receive some sort of payment for their hard work and dedication to the coaches, their fans, and their teammates. After all, college athletes spend as much time and work just as hard as professional athletes. Players bring in thousands of guest each game and don’t ever see a dollar bill. Especially if a player is on a partial ride, they are still having to pay for some of their college. But where are they going to get this money? Some say student athletes still have out of pocket costs totalling near 3,500 dollars. The students have no time to work with practicing and classes totalling near 43 hours a week, this averages near the American’s work week (Martin). Even the coaches of the NCAA teams bring in lots of dough each and every year. Some say they are getting most of their college paid for and that’s enough. But truly, scholarships only cover rooming, fees, some food, books, and other small supplies (Block). The students basically donate 43 hours of their time to the school to practice, play games, and go to school on a weekly basis. Since 43 hours of their week is already consumed, that leaves very little or no time to work. Do to their need to study or practice on their own. Even if they would squeeze a few hours every weekend into their busy schedule to work, they will not receive a good rate of pay to even come out ahead and make some cash.
