Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Not Be Paid

College sports have always been a point of interest for many people in the US as well as around the world. These sports are very entertaining to those who enjoy watching them and sometimes even those who do not. All credit for the amount of interest surrounding the sport lies in the players themselves, the college athletes. Fans spend thousands of dollars per year going to sporting events, buying merchandise, participating in activities on their favorite school campus, and donating money to their school of choice usually because they like a certain player or a group of players on the team. In an online article written by Rebecca Zissou, an interview she held with a former college athlete was mentioned. Zissou says, “Ramogi Huma, a former college athlete and the president of the National College Players Association, says that playing college sports is a full-time job.” Many times, college athletes are so dedicated to the sport they play that they can not hold a job because they spend most of their time training and competing, and this is backed by the words of Ramogi Huma. In the online article, Rebecca Zissou reiterates that college students rarely have time to maintain a job, school, and practice and competitions at the same time because they usually train 40 hours or more per week. The online article states, “Students can spend 40 hours a week practicing, training, and competing.” Because college athletes spend more than forty hours a week practicing and being involved in their sport, they have no spare time to have a job so being paid by the rich corporations would really help these athletes financially. College athlete’s scholarships often add up to over $100,000 which is enough money out of the school’s pocket so the school should not have to pay the player anymore. College’s award student athletes with plenty of scholarships which add up to be tens of thousands of dollars, so the school should not have to pay the athletes any more money than they already do in scholarships. In an online article composed by Adele Birkenes and Akash Bagaria, both authors collectively agree that college athletes should not be paid and they state, “Many get scholarships, which help pay for their tuition, supplies, housing, and sporting equipment. According to the NCAA, college athletes often receive grants worth more than $100,000.” Many people believe that scholarships cover everything the athlete needs or wants and the athletes have nothing to pay for, but this is very wrong because many athletic scholarships do not cover everything and the college athletes still have to purchase outside items using their own money.
