Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

Over the past years, college sports have been in demand across the United States. Whether it be, football, basketball , or baseball, since the early 2000’s, college sports have brought a payout for their Universities and increased the College’s reputation. For example, The University of Florida had the 3rd highest income based off of football games totaled at $106,030,895( Orland Sentientnel). With this amount of money being made, no athletes are paid back for their work.The NCAA states, “ You are not eligible for participation in a sport if you have ever: Taken pay, or the promise of pay, for competing in that sport” ( NCAA regulation 1). These students work hard each day, many working a total of 43.3 hours a week, more than the average full time job, but are not paid for their dedication. Some people even say, “College athletes are being exploited by their schools,which make millions of dollars off of intercollegiate athletics” (Should student athletes get paid). Colleges are using their athletes to increase population and bring in pay without paying them for their work. Many argue that college athletes are not paid because they are amateurs; however this is simply false considering “ being an amateur” is a broad term. These scholarships do not actually cover all their expenses. Many parents of the athletes can’t even come to a game. “Duke basketball players were valued at $1,025,656 while they were living just $732 above the poverty line.” ( “ The price of poverty in big time college sports”)’. Each year it goes without say that these athletes are basically living at poverty. That’s where being paid under the table comes into play. The universities give the players money, cars and even housing for playing on these teams.
There have been many times that athletes have been paid under the table for their dedication on the field. An example of that would be Reggie Bush. Reggie Bush was a running back for the University of southern California from 2003-2005. Reggie Bush and his family received more than $100,000 of financial benefits while he was at the college.
