Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

Ben Simmons, the number one overall draft pick of the 2016 NBA Draft, has come out talking harsh language about the National Collegiate Athletic Association. As Simmons being a former member of the NCAA, he claims that college athletes should be paid, by personal experience. Head coaches are famous enough that they earn millions yet players are more well known than the head coach and they get no yearly salary. College athletes should be paid because a scholarship really isn’t enough for a college athlete who practices for the school and whose suppose to represent the college, academically. Not paying a star college athlete what they’re suppose to be paid is an issue because they bring a huge profit to the college they represent and they get nothing in return as they risk their health for the college. College athletes should be paid because they play in games where the atmosphere and the way of play are so similar to the way a professional games are played. Colleges and the NCAA don’t want to pay college athletes as the argue that the athletes play in an amateur Division I type of game compared to the way professionals play (Furth). The NCAA keeps arguing that colleges play amateur sports and this keeps them from paying the athletes what they’re suppose to. As NCAA calls the sport that the athletes play “amateur”,so they only get cheap scholarships. The NCAA treat these college athletes unfairly and much lower than they are. As the NCAA keep not paying the college athletes, on top of that, they aren’t allowed to receive anything from anyone. The NCAA only lets colleges pay the athletes with educational benefits, but that’s not enough for the life of a college athlete (Eitzen). They can get no economic benefits or even gifts from anyone else. College athletes really only get help from either themselves their family, or a small college
