“United States Colleges awarded over $3 billion in athletic scholarships to varsity athletics in 2014.” That means that $3 billion goes to scholarships that are needed to make their sports teams look better for the school to get more enrollments. Also, if they would get paid where would this money come from for everyone to get paid? Then if they do get the money they will be many more problems with college students, doing dumb things with the money. So overall college athletes shouldn’t be paid.
Over the 2014 college year, Division 1 colleges gave away $2.2 billion in athletic scholarships out to athletes. This money that these college students get a scholarship is better than what they would get in cash. According to the college board, the average cost for a division 1 college is $21,902 per year. If a college athlete would get paid that means no more scholarships, and they won’t get enough money to pay for the entire time they are in college. Then if that happen, most people will be going teams that won the national champion in that sport. Then everyone will be bandwagoning to the good schools, and the smaller ones will be fighting to get more recruits. So giving them money defeats the purpose of making kids earn scholarships.
