TOUCHDOWN! SWISH! SAFE! No matter the sport NCAA college athletes do not disappoint. Often seen as the college’s most important role models athletes bring the vivid colors, mighty mascots, and school spirit to life. However, all that glitters is not gold. These athletes dedicate time, effort, and their talents to college sports. The student-athletes are the star attraction for these universities, but no amount of practice, work, blood, sweat, or tears will negate the fact that they’re not paid. Because NCAA athletes meet the criteria of an average employee, are given little-to-no scholarships, are often faced with double standards, and are generating revenue for their schools, they should be recognized under the Fair Labor Standards Acts.

Present NCAA guidelines states that their athletes may not receive any form of currency for the use of their reputation or persona or they would relinquish their amateur status and their university entitlement could be affected (Wire 1). Their faces, their names, and everything that makes them the athlete they are is stripped from them when they sign endorsement deals. The endorsement deals spread their name and likeness, but they will not see any profit from the use of it. That is not the only time they will be used for promotions. All broadcasting income, ticket and sports attire sales, personal promotions, and other sources of profits goes to the NCAA, the schools, coaches, event personnel, and everyone else involved in the business—aside from the athletes making the money (Johnson 2). Athletes generate revenue, but consequently they rarely see the money. Colleges and the NCAA bring forth a tremendous amount of money, and claim that it goes back for the sake of the athletes, but none of which has yet to be seen as beneficial.
