College Athletics is one of today’s many multibillion dollar industries. Millions of fans state and even nationwide pay to watch their favorite athletes compete against other teams, or to buy their favorite athletes merchandise. The downside to this story is that the individual the money should go to rarely ever receive it. College Athletes are currently being used by colleges and the NCAA (National College Athletics Association) in what some could call modern day slavery. They do not receive the full benefits their status entitles them to and it is usually difficult for student-athletes to obtain a job during and after college.

Sometimes the athlete’s ability becomes hindered by an injury. Impassioned Washington Monthly writer Louis Barbash explains, “Players also ran the risk that injuries would diminish or destroy their value to pro teams and thus their career prospects. And, of course, they played for free, donating services worth millions of dollars (Barbash).” With their hope of competing in a professional league destroyed athletes are left with their subpar education as a reward for their service. USA Today write Stephanie Stark explains the unfortunate situation like so, “The inability to spare time for an internship is crippling for student athletes. Coaches, earning on wins, emphasize the importance of team and commitment to the sport and discourage using off-season time to do anything but train (Stark).” Coaching staff’s lack of commitment towards encouraging athletes to obtain valuable internships leaves athletes with little to no opportunity of building an impressive or competitive resume’. Career readiness is sacrificed and discouraged in order to make sure athletes are able to adequately compete.
