The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the highest grossing and most profitable college program in the country. Despite the many adjustments, it still has not changed much over the past century. According to NCAA.org, the NCAA is a non-profit organization and their main source of income is generated from player performance. The organization accumulates approximately $1 billion a year, yet they don’t pay the athletes that generate the money for them. Many people believe that it is unfair to the players that they do not receive any income when they are what brings in the income. Over 80% of the revenue comes from television and marketing rights fees. That means over 80% of the money comes from the moments the players show their skills and entertain their audience. Ken Reed, of the Huffington Post, wrote an article saying that the compensation for college athletes is not as simple as many people might think. They believe the top athletes should get paid, but no one expects a Division III Bowler to get paid for what he/she does. A way around this complication would be through endorsements. The NCAA does not allow college players to get endorsements or other promotions. However, if this rule is reversed, then it will solve the issue.. Companies like Adidas or Nike should be able to pay student athletes to promote their items, that should be of no concern to the NCAA or colleges. It is completely fair and will allow a source of income to players who deserve it. Also, for smaller colleges or not as well known performers, local companies, banks, or businesses could give them money to promote their business. This way, all college athletes are capable of getting paid without the pressure on the NCAA.. For athletes that are not known or do not play much, this motivates them to work harder. If they do not receive any endorsements though, there is no punishment, they just stay at where they are today.
