Paying College Athletes One of the most widely debated and discussed issues in the world of college sports, has been whether or not to pay National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I (NCAA DI) student-athletes. There would be many effects on the college sports world if the decision was made to pay them, but those effects may pale in comparison to what is currently happening to the student-athletes. Division I student-athletes for the major college sports (men’s basketball, baseball, football, and men’s hockey) bring in massive amounts of money for the NCAA, but the athletes are not receiving any of that money. Players are not allowed to work a side job that earns them over $2,000 annually, and that is if their respective sport even leaves them enough time to work a job. Because for basically all of these kids their sport is their job, and it leaves little time for them to participate in activities outside the realm of that sport. This rule is especially hard on those student-athletes who do not receive a full-ride scholarship from the school, and are left to pay for college all by themselves. And if someone from the school wants to help those kids out, they had better think twice because it is illegal to receive money from the school for any purpose. So if a player is struggling financially, then his coach cannot give him $10 for food. Also many of these players come from tumultuous neighborhoods and struggle academically, but no student-athletes are allowed to send a paper to a tutor at their school and have them correct grammatical mistakes. Student-athletes are also not allowed to make any money off of their likeness, such as selling a textbook that they purchased if it has their name on it. The NCAA makes the situation much worse with all of the ludicrous regulations that are placed on these
