College sports are hard work, practices take up about 60 hours a week. Does that sound like a job? College athletes as of now are not paid by the college. Even if an athlete is injured, the college is not required to pay the player’s injury. Even within the last 12 years the amount of money generated by 2 sports has increased by 300%, and the athletes still can be paid anything? College players should be paid for their efforts on and off the field, because some of these athletes end up not having enough money to continue going to college.
To begin the first claim towards why college players should be paid is financial problems. Money Can be a problem in general for just the average college student, add in that “student athletes spend up to 60 hours a week practicing”(Meshefejian), this can become a real issue. If the “college athletes are paid they would be more motivated to stay in school, instead of joining professional teams”(Compensation For College Athletes). If these have 20 year old kids have a decent salary why would they want to risk it for a chance at nothing. These athletes can’t even make money from ads because “College athletes are forbidden from doing advertisements”(College Athletes Should Be Paid). If the school isn’t going to pay them, why does the school care if a company does, if anything wouldn’t just bring more revenue to the school? Lastly, if these athletes are paid the amount of under the table autographs and jersey sales would be greatly decreased. The main reason the players do this is for extra money, if they had the money already there’s a good chance this suspension isn’t as frequent. Motivation is a key reason why these athletes should be
