Minimum wage in North Carolina is supposed to be seven twenty-five an hour. For a college student this money is extremely helpful. It is extra pocket change for food and other necessities, but this money is also used to help with tuition. Athletes also have to spend this money, but they don’t have the freedom to work because practices and games are so time consuming. The athletics department is also responsible for bringing in a large portion of the school’s income from supporters and alumni members. So if you had the power to reverse these facts would you try to change the way these payers are treated? On average a college student can spend anywhere from $3,850-$11,000 not including the actual tuition. For the average student is money they receive through working and from gifts provided by people important to them. If an athlete wanted to receive half this amount of income they’re more likely to receive this as a form of gift. Many college athletes are considered walk-ons because they weren’t recruited by the school. This means that the student wasn’t offered a scholarship or any kind of academic compensation. In some cases, the athlete is redshirted for a season meaning that they have to participate in all practices and appear at the games in case they’re needed. In a way this is how the team decides who is truly dedicated to the team and who is the most deserving of certain scholarships.
