What most people don't realize is that, in the term student-athlete, the student part comes before the athlete part. With this being said, why are some collegiate level athletes demanding to be compensated for their participation in their respective athletic departments? They are students just like the others at their universities and they aren't going to be paid for their participation in academics. College athletes should not be paid for their play, because they are already compensated enough from their scholarships, gender and difference in sport inequality would come of it, and it's not the NCAA’s fault they know how to market their product. Generally speaking, the average cost of attending a four year public or private university can range from $92,000-$125,000. This the standard for a normal student, without the many benefits of class leading tutors or private facilities to study and complete homework. Athletes with full rides are provided full time college for free with room and board. In addition to this, as of 2015, the NCAA has allowed athletic departments to give stipends, which are small grants of money, to pay for any extra expenditures they might have. Think about it this way, what two sports generate the most money from viewership and merchandise? That would be football and basketball; those two sports make most of the money for the “non-profit” NCAA. Why should these sports be paid more than say women's soccer, or a men's lacrosse team? At the same time why do these smaller and less popular sports, by general viewership, deserve as much of a cut as the sports who bring in all of the dough.
