Paying College Athletes what they Deserve
College athletes spend a huge amount of time each week working on their game and bring in an extremely large amount of money in revenue each year for the NCAA yet do not receive any of the revenue made. The benefits of paying athletes far surpass their disadvantages and would make the organization better as a whole. D-1 college athletes spend a large amount of their college life playing or practicing their game yet do not get rewarded for their hard work. Without these college athletes the NCAA would not have made all the money that they have made. All of the people that watch the games watch to see the players play not the coaches coach or officials officiate. If colleges were to pay division one college athletes, many of the big name players would stay in school longer and have less of an incentive to leave early for the pros. For example the men's basketball team at the University of Louisville made $24.2 million in profits in 2014 (Nocera). Each player of that team should receive a small fraction of that total so the college keeps about 90% of the profits and the players receive the other 10% based on their impact to that team. The team could give contracts to each player with a percentage of the profits that the team makes instead of an actual salary. This would further motivate the player to do the best they can to maximize the profits the college makes and they do as well. Also, the players should be able to sell their own name in the form of autographs, jersey, t-shirts, hats, bobble heads and more. If college athletes were to get paid in these ways it would greatly benefit, not just them, but the NCAA organization
