Many sources have been gathered to strengthen this side of the argument. Many columnists across the United States have expressed their strong stances on the topic. The NCAA has been surrounded by this argument for years now, and will continue until they find an answer. Is walking away from college debt free not enough for college athletes? For example, a normal student attending Texas University, after four years, could have paid over $250,000. In a sense, athletes are getting paid, just not the salary they desire. Also, in the four years at their university, they receive national attention which will help further their careers. In the article from The Washington Post, the author, Bowen (2014) says, “So if all college athletes were paid, the money would probably come from football and men’s basketball programs” (para. 5). This point, the author brings up another reason why athletes should not be paid. The athletes should not be able to take a salary from their universities profit. Players feel they are “employees” to the university they are attending, but they are just student athletes who do not deserve to be paid (Bowen, 2014). Many students at any university have a job to help pay for their schooling. Then, there are athletes who feel like they should receive free tuition and a salary for their play on the field or court. Although, the NCAA has been investigating this issue for many years now, no change has been made as of yet. The college athletes are very fortunate enough to walk through their experience at college for free. Not only are they getting college for free, they also receive many benefits along with the free college. But, if the college athletes want to challenge this, a players union needs to be formed (Finkel & Martin, 2013). College athletes are not professional athletes, therefore they should not be paid a salary. Athletes already get a hefty scholarship worth around $250,000. Mentioned before, after federal income taxes, a scholarship is definitely the better option. The researcher found many different opinions on this topic. Many agreeing with researcher, college athletes should not be paid. College athletes are still considered ameature athletes. The college athletes are not worth a single penny until they hit the professional stage. To close, college sports are loved for the players heart and intensity they play with. If a salary is implemented, it may just affect the style of play the athletes play with. College athletes deserve nothing more than the full ride scholarship they already
