“Violent Media is Good for Kids” by Gerard Jones sheds light on why violent media/games have a positive influence on kids and why it should be encouraged. Many people think that any sort of violent games or media is bad for kids and can only lead to bad things. There are times for some when media and games become too violent and they stop associating with that, but for others it is an escape. A place where the world doesn’t hurt as much. “The world is uncontrollable and incomprehensible; mastering it is a terrifying, enraging task” (Jones para. 10). It can lead to actual, real-life violence. People worry that these games and these things they see online will lead their kids to grow up and become dangerous. In some aspects, this may be true but in bigger aspects it is the complete opposite. Seeing these powerful, heroic characters in a video game make the kids seeing them realize that they can be just like them. They can be just as powerful and just as heroic without being violent. There are so many different ways to connect with this story and with a subject like this in general. “Children need violent entertainment in order to explore the inescapable feelings that they’ve been taught to deny, and to reintegrate those feelings into a more whole, more complex, more resilient selfhood” (Jones para. 7). People go through so much throughout their lifetime, but I think kids take on a lot more than people realize. They have to deal with the struggles of getting through all of the stages of school. They have to deal with making friends and losing friends and maybe even losing family. These struggles can make it hard to happily live in the world. They find solace in these characters and even at times they find themselves. Parents play a big role in the development of kids as well. Parents always tell their children to do certain things that end up shaping them into someone they may not want to be. Letting these children surround themselves with this media and other kids that like this media will let them become who they really want to be and who they really think they are. These kids are able to find people who relate to them and find people who have similar struggles as them. I personally don’t have very much experience with violent games or video games in general, but I can still relate to this. I find that reading or simply just watching TV gives me the solace I need. I sort of escape from whatever is happening to me in real life and immerse myself in these characters and the world they are living in. I think that it is important for everyone to have some sort of
