483 Words2 Pages

Introduction:

In the society of ancient Rome, the Architecture represents one of the most interesting interpretations of the Roman Culture. I will analyze first the arch, a curvilinear structural element adopted by Romans, and then the concrete, widely used in art and in the Roman architecture world.

Body:

The arch, made of stone or other materials, has the purpose of covering and allowing an open passage, within a wall. The architectural element allows managing the weight of the structure, freeing it and depositing it laterally, on the jambs. Just its shape. Surely it is a component endowed with an important expressive capacity. The arch can be in different forms, which reflect the various architectural civilizations that apply it. Two different techniques gave rise to the realization of the arch: blocks of various sizes were inserted on each other. The ribs, whose size varied according to the extent of the light of the arch, supported the whole complex. But for the construction of the arch, the use of the concrete was also used. Building an arch with wedge-shaped stones is a painstaking engineering effort, but once you master the technique, you can use it for even more projects.

Cement is one of the few materials that, in its history, has seen the relationship between man and nature be emphasized. Nature, with its extraordinary raw materials and man with his creativity and research skills.

Concrete:

Already the Egyptians and Romans were looking for a binder that would strengthen their construction and even then realized that the mixture of different materials could be the right key to get what they were looking for. The Romans were the first to use dough based on mud and stone materials extracted from the volcanic rock of Pozzuoli, from which the name of pozzolana derives. They call it "betunium," and it was largely used in the construction of
