Wendy is a very kind and caring African American women who is the director of the 4th floor ICU at North Broward hospital. She is all things great. Wendy’s passion and dedication goes above and beyond she does her job with a smile even when picking up others slack with unparalleled compassion and commitment. The traits I admire the most is her integrity standing by everything right, her ability to fairly delegate responsibility and keeping everyone happy, and hunger to learn and get better.

Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
In this assignment, I will be considering the leadership and management theories and approaches, applying them to children’s services. I will ensure to identify and critically evaluate aspects of effective provision for children; identifying factors which contribute to communities of practice in relation to services for children. I will be mentioning four different types of leadership theories including: Trait, Behavioural, Contingency and Power and Influence theories. Leadership is very diverse and has several meanings to it. For some it is an ability to carry out a task, for others it is a skill, or a process in which they learn.
Leadership Analysis Introduction One of the popular definitions of a leader is, "The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers." In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.

However, Clark (2009) states that an effective nurse leader utilizes appropriate leadership theories to guide their actions as well as they are required to apply their knowledge and problem solving skills to develop creative solutions to managerial issues on the ward. On the other hand management is concerned with its five core principles; according to Kannan (2004b) these principles were revised and are now thought as planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling (as cited in Clark, 2009). Furthermore, Clark pointed out that leadership and management often overlap. Therefore,
Mosadeghard (2003) had pointed out different styles of leadership. These styles are: autocratic, bureaucratic, laissez-faire, charismatic, democratic, participative, situational, transactional, and transformational leadership. Aioanei (2006) explained that in autocratic leadership style, organization is highly centralized. Leaders are more concerned with the tasks to be performed rather than developing relations. In this type of leadership employees are less involved and most of the decisions are made by the management.
Individuals who abuse an autocratic style are regularly seen as controlling, bossy which can prompt to hatred among members. For example, eighteen years experience unit manager was promoted to chief nursing officer. She has an even tempered identity and by and gets along well with subordinate representatives, she doesn't need her authority or choices to be questioned. She settles on each significant decision that includes and involves the operations of the nursing division and won't assign any part of her decision making, regardless of the possibility that the decisions would effortlessly fall within the level of power of the house supervisors or unit manager. She expects that every subordinate representative will obey orders without openly questioning the methods of reasoning.
Individual Reflective Paper Introduction Leadership, a controversial concept, has been studied for centuries. Scholars who study leadership have argued with the insight of leadership for many decades and finally promote a wide range of understandings of it. This course “values and leadership” introduces the basic principles and concepts about leadership, and provides us with some conceptual knowledge and practical approaches to be an outstanding leaders. I chose to take this course because I am interested in the topic about leadership.
Bass and Avolio (1993) pointed out that leadership style is based on behavior areas from laissez-fair (no leadership) to participative (take inputs from subordinate but ultimate decision making with the leader) through transactional leadership (which depends on reward system and punishments) to transformational leadership (which is based on inspiration and behavioral charisma) and ultimately Autocratic leadership (absolute power on decision making). The researcher selected above approach since it has been developed recently and efficiently demonstrated through research findings. The various components are further elaborated below; 1. Laissez-fair Style Laissez-fair leaders are characterized as an avoidant leader who may uninvolved with their subordinates. As per Mondy and Premeaux (1995), these leaders let group members to make all decisions.
‘Organizations provide its managers with legitimate authority to lead, but there is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively’ (Lunenburg, 2011). Organizational success usually requires a combination of both management and leadership. In today’s dynamic work environment, leaders are expected to challenge the present state of affairs, and to motivate and convince organization members. Managers are needed to assist in creating and maintaining a positive and well-functioning workplace. ‘Leadership and management are often considered practically overlapping concepts’ (Bohoris and Vorria, 2007, p. 1).
