Summary: How to Summarize Without Plagiarizing discusses many contemporary facets of plagiarism in academic writing. Plagiarism refers to the act of using the work or ideas of others, and essentially using them as one's own ideas in academic writing. Considering that all academic writing is argument in some fashion, when summarizing, it is imperative to consider the importance of conveying one's own thought process in order to develop a clear, concise argument. By providing thoughts of others and not that of one's self, the writing process becomes corrupted, and thoughts are no longer legitimate. Many topics are reflective of key concepts in writing, and it is important to thoroughly address any topic with confidence throughout your writing. To build on your writing skills, you may consider reviewing works of experienced writers. This essentially leads one to ask how they should write academically without plagiarizing. There as several paths to take to avoid infringing upon another scholastic writing. Your first consideration should be geared towards ensuring your understand of your references before using them. The next should be developing an introduction in which you either use you own thoughts, or reference the thoughts of the writing and author in which you share similar ideas. Essentially, this leads to citing textual evidence to ensure that you credit the author of the work. One suggestion to consider is writing your body paragraphs using your own thoughts. By reviewing and using the thoughts of others, you never want to overuse lines from another writing. This is allowing the paper to write for you. Instead, be sure to allow your thought process to develop its own ideas so that your work will be original. Parenthetical citations of the author's name and work listed directly after the sentence that you referenced are of great significance in avoiding plagiarism. Finally, be sure to use an online plagiarism checker service. Whereas you know that your writing is original, it could contain specific words and lines from other published sources.
