Annotating, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing- The Good, The Better, The Best
Being in college can be pretty stressful when you don’t know the correct strategies to learn, or you were never given any of the correct tools to learn in high school. By learning and using certain concepts of writing and reviewing, one can improve and succeed in their college academics. Annotating, summarizing, and paraphrasing are all equally important concepts of texts, and can all be used in unison, or alone, in different ways to help improve a college student’s understanding and performance in school. Paraphrasing takes the bits of information or text, and rephrases it in different words and style to to avoid stealing the original author's words. Paraphrasing is much more “pretty”, when compared to a summary, because a paraphrased text is the same length and order as the original, and includes a new style and understanding of writing to relay the same body of information (Merle,2017). Paraphrased text cannot contain the same words from the original text, but still must be cited offer proper accreditation to the original author, because it is considered an outside source. Not only is paraphrasing beneficial to students when needing to add information to writing, It also helps a student to learn topics on their own level of understanding, like taking very difficult words and sentences, and turning them into more clearer forms without changing the sentence's length (Hale, 2001 …show more content…
Summarizing is much like paraphrasing, however it is a concept that only picks out the most important material within a text. Summarizing is oftentimes a much harder concept to teach to college students, because of its different set-up. Summarizing consists of breaking apart a larger text into more understandable smaller text, using your own words and style, with citations. Summaries include the main topics of the text, with less verbiage, no outside quotes, citations, and flows easily as read. Teaching students to summarize is sometimes difficult because it is not just taking the texts words and making it into their own words, like paraphrasing. Summarizing takes some higher level thinking skills on manipulating words, picking out main ideas and condensing them, thus also helping to improve the skills. Summarizing also helps improve memory of the subject- because it is main idea centered(Summarizing, 2015).
