Andrew Jackson is considered one of the most important presidents in American history, although Jackson is not without his blemishes. Jackson put together a long political career and held many public office positions, not just President of the United States. It was a battle for Jackson to get to the White House having to run twice before he was elected president. While President, Jackson was nicknamed the people’s president because of the actions he took during office. Jackson felt determined to eliminate corruption in Washington after going thru the corrupt bargain of the election of 1824. Jackson had to fight his own Vice-President in regards to the nullification crisis of South Carolina. Federal tariffs were put into place in 1832, South Carolina felt that the tariffs unfairly benefiting the northern manufactures. Calhoun made popular the idea that states could nullify or not follow certain laws they felt unconstitutional. The root of all this was really slavery, if South Carolina could set the stage for states not following federal laws, that way if the federal government ever decide to ban slavery. South Carolina would just not follow the law or secede from the Union. Although Jackson stood tough on the issue and did not allow South Carolina to nullify anything. Jackson threatened the use of military force to make South Carolina comply. However, a compromise was passed by Congress to slowly reduce the tariff, year by year. After dealing with the nullification crisis, Jackson turned back to the national bank. Jackson tried to withdraw all of the government’s money in the national bank. This in turn, would take the power right out of the bank and essentially cripple it. However, Jackson’s opponents in the Senate tried to stop this from going through. But, in 1834 Jackson’s proposal went through withdrawing all of the government’s money, essentially killing the national
