Animals have existed by human’s side for millions of years, however, recently, certain animals are being used to test human products. Products that are not significant compared to the pain animals such as guinea pigs, dogs, rats; and rabbit are forced to endure. Would testing that one lipstick formula or mascara be worth the agony of a living soul? For some, the answer would be yes, our own selfish needs outweigh their effects on others. Perhaps some people would even be the ones testing on these animals as long as they get paid.
Some say that animal experimentation is good for us but is it good for the animals? Animal experimentation is cruel to the animals but not many people can see that because all they are thinking about is themselves. People use animals to test human products on them to see if they would be good for us but how do the animals feel when we hurt them like that? Animals are our companions and they were always meant to be our companions but lately the most they have been used for is animal testing.
The laboratories in which rabbits and other animals are tested, the rabbits are held in small cages by themselves for weeks and months. There is no sunlight and the rabbits are not allowed to go outside. Rabbit 32 which is one of the 170,000 rabbits who will be killed this year due to animal testing, is locked up by himself waiting for people to do test on him. Some of the tests that Rabbit 32 has endured is being fed chemicals to see how it affects the rabbit. Another test that the scientist do is, a device to hold the rabbit down so it cannot move and the scientist drip chemicals into the eyes and onto the skin and wait to see how the rabbits react to the chemical.
I personally appreciate utilitarianism because it makes sense to do what is best for the group or that which produces the most happiness. In my opinion, it is considered so radical because of its collectivistic approach in a more individualistic culture. Furthermore, it goes against religious doctrine since it does not follow a defined doctrine that dictates whether something is right or wrong. While I appreciate its logic, I do not agree with the utilitarian stance on all issues.
Is Animal Testing Justified Ethically? The idea and processes of animal testing and experimentation originated thousands of years ago. Back then it was only used for medical research and curiosity. Nowadays, animal testing and experimentation is used for a wide range of things; determining the effectiveness of a cancer treating drug or if a cosmetic product causes skin or eye irritation.
Introduction Animals testing have significantly contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge in general and to biomedical progress specifically. Many example showing that laboratory animals in medical development and other aspects have significantly influenced human health and reduced suffering, for example improved diagnosis of infectious disease (Hau, Jann, Schapiro & Steven, 2002). But since 1960s and 1970s, animals testing protests has gained prominence and strength, people start to argue is it moral to continue “cruel” animal testing. Animal Testing is a Moral Act In the rest of this article, I shall apply different concept under utilitarianism try to discuss whether animal testing are moral acts. It is important to notice that (1) in this article, applying the general idea of utilitarianism which is “the greatest happiness of greatest number” and (2) the animals testing under the rules and regulations.
The most egregious unethical practice towards animals would be Animal Testing! I believe this is the worst because it is completely unnecessary. Medical testing is preformed on animals because the are most closely related to humans. However if these animals are really like us, how can we in good conscience allow them to suffer. Science has already proved that animals think, experience emotion, and feel pain.
A wise man once said, “He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals. ”(Goodreads.com). Animal testing is just a way to treat animals poorly. Scientists are able to be satisfied with themselves as they rub products into an animal's eyes without hesitation.
Henceforth, as animal testing increased, so did the controversy surrounding it (“Animal testing,” n.d.). Moreover, with the help of animal testing, various treatments and medicines are developed for unconventional diseases. Although animal testing may seem ruthless, animals are used for experimental research that contributes to science if there are no other possible substitutes. Animal testing is a debatable topic that still continues to be one until this time. To begin, in my own personal experience, for example, I have seen a video on YouTube of what can happen to those animals that are tested. The animals looked scared, and looked like they were hurt. I’m here today to talk about a controversial issue that has been around for a period of time, animal testing. Animal testing using animals in experiments with different chemical substances in everything from medical to cosmetic to determine their safety as well as effectiveness . It’s a problem that has existed since the 3rd and 4th centuries BCE with its merciless methods and painful ways of abusing animals for human demands, but now it’s time for it to stop. Our technology has developed significantly since; therefore, such medieval methods of torturing animals are no longer necessary. Researches have shown that each year, over 100 million animals are tortured and killed in American laboratories alone, including dogs, cats and more; this shows how far out of hand animal testing have gotten.
Imagine an enraged animal rights activist charging toward a scientist in a white lab coat, desperate to free the little mice that are being used as test subjects. Although comical, this scene may be quite accurate when describing the passion that animal lovers have when it comes to the touchy subject of animal testing. For centuries, animal testing has been used in the medical research field, however many are now beginning to question whether it is ethical. Millions of animals are killed per year due to animal testing, so is this practice worth banning? Animal testing is a controversial subject, with supporters pointing out the medical advances that have stemmed from animal research and animal rights activists declaring it cruel and immoral.
Animal testing is a phrase that most people have heard but are perhaps still unsure of exactly what it involve. Whether it is called animal testing, experimentation or research, it should be defined as all testing methods on animals including, medical exploration, cosmetics, toxicology trialing, and psychological examination involving animal subjects. It is used to assess the safety and effectiveness of medications and beauty products as well as understanding how the human physiology works. While supporters believe it is necessary practice, those against animal testing believe that it involves torture and suffering to animals. Medical research is the hardest case of proposition in the debate whether animal testing should be banned or not, since it has previously yielded substantial benefits for humanity.
Science researches believe that products which have been tested on animals will make humans’ life better. However, the main concern on this issue is that animals are suffering from unnecessary pain. Animals are mostly exposed to radiation, forced to inhale poisonous gases and injected with harmful substances prior to the experiment. Thus, animal testing should be banned because it is cruel, the result is unreliable and expensive.
