Dear Editor, I have recently read the “Schools Are Outdated”. It’s Time for Reform” written by Paul Boyce. I am writing to voice my dissatisfaction with the way the education system was portrayed in a particularly recent article. While Boyce expresses legitimate concerns regarding the need for educational reform, his portrayal of schools as places where creativity and critical thought are suppressed is excessively simplified and and fails to capture the complexity of the issue. Boyce contends that children have limited opportunities to experience childhood within the existing educational framework, suggesting that “play is stifled” and creativity is hindered. Despite the need for enhancements in promoting creativity and inquiry-based learning, Boyce's depiction fails to acknowledge the numerous educational institutions and teachers that actively promote exploration and critical thinking among students. Despite some people not being keen on tests and strict classroom rules, there's evidence to suggest that students are actually doing better. For instance, studies from the Department for Education in the UK show that the overall GCSE pass rate has been increasing steadily over the past decade. In fact, in 2020, 78.8% of students achieved grades 9-4 in their GCSE exams, which is the highest it's been in recent years. Additionally, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results also indicate that British students are performing better in reading, math, and science compared to previous assessments.
