Online learning in higher education institutions has become a boom in the last years. It is a tool for non traditional students juggling with several responsibilities wanting to pursue an education with time flexibility. More students are enrolling in online courses and universities are looking for ways to engage students in an online environment. However, the current online platform seems to have several issues. For instance, communication between students and professors is often lost in online learning. Yet, universities are pushing online courses more and more in order to teach more students using less resources.
The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to go in depth and analyze what online learning is and ways it needs to be improved. The several academic journals used in this bibliography show different perspectives and studies revolving around online learning. What can a professor do in order to engage communication with students? What things need to be improve with the current online platform? These questions are important because they related to the main problematic question: how to change the way online courses are taught? The research was conducted over several days throughout the end of May 2017 and the beginning of June 2017. The research mainly includes articles found in several academic journals that conducted studies on online learning. Subsequently, this research has helped me understand different perspectives regarding online learning. Authors mentioned in this bibliography discuss different problems encountered in online learning as well as proposals on how to solve the problems. Likewise, most authors portray a negative outlook on how online courses are being
