While it is important for teams to have a winning season, it is also of great importance to have effective coaching. Effective coaching goes deeper than wins and losses, it's getting to know players on a more personal level. The article states that “Coaches who focus on positive, personal relationships with their athletes ensure success beyond their record on the field” (James 1). When coaches have a relationship with players off the field, they gain trust from their players, which allows players to feel more at ease to go to their coaches when they need help either on or off the field. “A strong coach-athlete relationship is important not only for the athlete’s growth as a positive, ethical, and moral person, but for the team’s performance as a whole” (James 1).
