Owosso High School’s head boy’s basketball coach, David Owens, is a small town legend in his own right. With over 20 plus years of college and high school basketball under his belt, he has had the privilege to work under the supervision of Michigan State’s head basketball coach, Tom Izzo, and Indiana University’s Bob Knight, as an assistant video coordinator for each program. Although we did not like being pushed at the time, being told we could give more is often what teams need in order to succeed. Herb Brooks pushed his players to believe that they had greatness within them. His players, including many other people did not believe at first. But his players later came to believe because their coach believed.

To fix the tragedy that most African American citizens goes through of discrimination and pain we the people need to come together and protest for what we think is right just like in earlier times of tragedy’s. Kneeling during the National Anthem spreads the awareness of black discrimination and gives a voice to those in need. When coached correctly, these athletes bloom into outstanding individuals that are going to achieve great things when they are finished playing their sports. This must be very rewarding for the athletes to understand that not only are they getting the opportunity to continue to play their sport, but they are learning life skills such as time management, how to be a leader, and how to be a positive member on a team. When the athletes are out on their own and working at their own jobs, they will understand principles of hard work much more than that of their coworkers because of their experience in college. College basketball tournaments act as a platform for NBA scouts to identify young talents to be drafted to various NBA teams. However, according to recent surveys, less than 2% of college basketball players manage to get into the NBA teams (Goldman 210). That is, 98% of college basketball players are faced with a potential early end to their careers after college. Despite the uncertainties facing the athletes' futures, these young men enhance the brand and reputation of their colleges.
