In the world today, people experience many problems and events that could either make them happier or make them change in a bad way. Depression is something that various amounts of people go through. Men and woman both experience depression but does one gender struggle with it more? Depression can develop in countless ways, we never know what a person can go thorough to get depression. Men and woman experience depression in different ways. I wonder if depression occurs more in one gender rather than the other. This paper will provide evidence to answer the question: Is depression affected by gender?

In the United states it is reported that woman are two-thirds more likely to be depressed than men. In a study by Nazroo they discovered that episodes of depression were almost always preceded by a major life event. Woman experienced milder symptom states then men when a study was done by Nazroo. Another alternative for the reason of gender differences in depression rates may be the result of men developing different disorders in response to stress, such as antisocial behavior and alcohol abuse. In many cases woman have more stress in a family then the men, “Overall, women had an 80% greater risk of an episode of depression following a crisis (Nazroo et al., 1998). This risk was more than five times greater for women following crises involving children, housing and reproduction.” (Nazroo et al., 1998) There is also the case that identity can be a factor in depression, the typical woman identity will experience depression more then men because woman tend to be more emotional and soft …show more content…

Life circumstances and cultural stressors play a role. Although these stressors can also occur in men, it's usually at a lower rate. Some factors that play a major role in woman depression are unequal power and status, work overload, and sexual or physical abuse. Woman are usually treated as a lower status then men and thats how its always been. We've come a long way to change then but there is still a small rates of woman not being equal to men. This results in low self-esteem. Woman have the stress of going to work and having home responsibilities. And lastly, women who were emotionally, physically or sexually abused as children or adults are more likely to experience depression at some point in their lives than those who weren't abused.
