This article focuses on prisoners who have tragically passed through New York City's prison system, primarily focusing on Rikers Island. The author is attempting to shed light on the crisis of neglect and abuse inside prisons, whether that be through limiting health care, mental health support, and unfortunately physically abusing prisoners. The author is drawing attention to conditions in prisons through viewing these actions, though working for NYC health services for jail systems, they have worked tirelessly since to try to address these awful conditions. This source is believed to be an academic article for the reason that it intends to inform the reader of conditions within Rikers Island prison.
