Cacioppo and Freberg (2013) discussed medication and its usage in the treatment of depression and bipolar disorders. Depression and bipolar disorder, both share the common experience and underlying biological roots of depression. The most common medications discussed are tranquilizers, antidepressants, behavioral and cognitive behavioral techniques are used to treat anxiety disorders. Surprisingly to what most individuals think aerobic exercise is way to treat the medical and cognitive behavioral. However, the number one option that is highly chosen is antidepressant medications. Which is generally also an option that is being overprescribed instead of finding other alternatives of treatment. Cacioppo and Freberg (2013) also further discussed medication and its usage in the treatment of ADHD. Their treatment is done with medication and a behavior therapy. The most common drug name is Ritalin that I have seen several children on the medication. In my personal opinion, when children are diagnosed with ADHD they are immediately prescribed some form of medication like Ritalin. Hardly ever do you see some sort of behavior therapy that is been used or other alternatives. While most parents are happy that the child is diagnosed they also do not ask for other alternatives for their …show more content…

e. Then the therapist conducts a test on the child. f. The child then goes to their doctor and the doctor determines if the child has ADHD and what type of treatment they should use. V. These medications include steroids, amphetamines, antidepressants, as well as high doses of anticonvulsants and narcotics (2015 page 502-503). The patient needs to know that there are three stages of bipolar disorder as well. These stages include hypomania, acute mania and delirious
Charles Barber’s article, “The Medicated Americans: Antidepressants Prescriptions on the Rise,” focuses on the views of “depression” and “Depression” that are caused by antidepressants like Prozac, Paxil, and Norpramin. Barber talks about how people do not understand the differences of depression which causes misdiagnoses and misunderstanding of the two. One meaning of “Depression” is how it is used to do describe a serious medical condition and the other meaning a broad terming meaning feeling down, bummed out, or anything along those lines. A study conducted by the New England Research Institution showed that 43 percent of people who have been prescribed antidepressants did not have any diagnosis of depression or any mental health conditions.
Most people with bipolar disorder need medication to prevent new episodes and stay symptom-free. b. There is more to treatment than medication. Medication alone is usually not enough to fully control the symptoms of bipolar disorder. The most effective treatment strategy for bipolar disorder involves a combination of medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, and social support. c.
Bipolar Disorder is a serious problem in the world, but it has especially been a prominent problem in the United States. Bipolar Disorder is becoming more and more of an issue that is affecting teenagers and young adults. The majority of people that suffer from Bipolar disorder are those in high school/college and can cause many complications in people’s lives. Researchers are currently trying to find a way to resolve this disorder and make it easier for the people who have it. Present-day, there has been some therapies and medications to help this disorder.
Many children have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and the amount of those children being prescribed a medication for their disorder has grown largely in the last couple of years. This caused concern to arise in doctors; some of them went as far to say that most children diagnosed and treated for ADHD are really just immature and undisciplined (Koplewicz). Even if this is untrue, they say that the children would do better if treated with alternative options. Children diagnosed with ADHD are in serious distress, but not because of bad teaching or parenting. It is because their brains work differently than others, and they need to be treated properly.
Some of these include: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT is a type of talk therapy that can help individuals identify and change negative thoughts and behaviors that may be contributing to their depression. Interpersonal therapy (IPT): IPT is a type of therapy that focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and communication skills. It can help individuals with depression improve their relationships with family and friends, which can help reduce symptoms of depression. Medication management: Antidepressant medications can be an effective treatment for depression. Outpatient services can provide medication management services to ensure that individuals are taking the appropriate medications and are being monitored for side effects.
A multidisciplinary approach is needed to treat this disease. Treatment options provide successful treatment for this disorder in 80 % of the patients, include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor’s medications such as sertraline (Zoloft), Citalopram (celexa) which are considered the first line drugs of treatment. Serotonin/ norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors and medications such as mirtazapine, and bupropion also prescribed. The treatment used to treat DID is psychotherapy — a treatment that is recommended that focuses on “individual modality and emphasize the integration of the various personality states into one”. Another treatment that is medication. Medication is usually needed with patients that have a severe problem with depressions, anxiety, anger and impulse control. Medications that are commonly used are antidepressants — citalopram, venlafaxine, phenelzine, fluoxetine, and sertraline. Depressants, such as carisoprodol, atropine, benzodiazepines, and cyclobenzaprine.
The amygdala relates back to human emotions, and new research shows that motivation is a factor in what makes that part of the brain active. The purpose of the research was to figure out how much of an impact motivation makes instead of emotion in the amygdala. In the experiment, fifty-four women were given testerone and shown pictures of happy and angry faces. They would either reject or approach the faces while in a brain scan. It was also a double blind, placebo controlled study which adds to the credibility of the experiment.
The biological approach has been effectively practising and treating mental disorders . Drugs therapy has been very popular among the patients and has enabled patients with mental illness to live a reasonably normal life, anti depressant and antipsychotic medications (Tablets) are popular among the patients. Behavioural approach focuses on the behaviour and looks to eliminate unwanted or maladaptive behaviour such as addictions, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) as they believe the behaviour is learned and can be un-learned via different therapy( Counselling- directory.org.uk, 2017).. Desensitisation and reinforcement technique are popular therapy. Similarly, psychodynamic therapist uses the talking therapy (counselling) to treat people with mental illness, they listen to the patient’s feelings and talk about what had happened in their early life and try to resolve the problem they had.
Working with case scenario 1, it is quite evident that Simone is suffering depression and anxiety. When working with depression, there are two basic interventions; one is increasing a valued activity, the other is changing the thoughts that keep the depression going (Otto, 2011). From previous sessions with Simone and exploring what has recently been causing negative thinking, her automated thoughts have been revealed. We can assume her recurring thoughts of feeling like a failure and her thought of having nothing to offer in life are perpetuating her low mood, loss of interest in activities, and procrastination in looking for a new job. “Negative automated thoughts, when unchallenged, often become self fulfilling prophecies during the
The cognitive level of analysis aims to study how the inner processes of the mind processes information gained, and how they are interpreted and applied into the real world. Within this level of analysis, it was found that the cognitive and biological factors of our mind influence how we feel, or in other words, our emotions. Emotion can be defined as the body’s response to any specific situation. As all human beings can express how they feel through facial expressions, this suggests that emotions are biological rather than cognitive. However, emotions can be dependent on both the cognitive and biological factors of our body.
It is time consuming because it takes a long time to deconstruct each personality and bringing them together to form one solid identity. Cognitive therapy – to discuss with a licensed therapist underlying issues that have contributed to the disorder and work towards learning new coping methods to prevent forming future identities. For these people, learning how to cope with anxiety and stress is important for recovery. Art/Music therapy – so the client can express emotions in a nonjudgmental and safe environment. Medications – there is no specific medication to treat this condition.
