After spending the last 18 years of his life behind bars, Anthony Graves left prison as a free man. Graves was convicted of assisting Robert Earl Carter in the murder of Bobbie Davis and five others in Burleson County. There were no physical evidence that linked Graves to the murder and eyewitnesses confirmed his alibi at the time of the killing. But, Carter pointed out that Graves was the killer, and his testimony alone led to Graves being convicted of the slayings and was later sentenced to death. Graves’ life was spared when the case’s lead prosecutor, District Attorney Charles Sebesta, shed light to Carter’s previous confession admitting that he alone was the murderer.
Luis is killed by the head trauma by the blackjack causing a brain aneurysm to burst, killing him. Paul is upset over the loss of a friend but his guilt for not saying anything about him getting him is the worst for him. This all goes to show that the choices that Erik made effects Paul greatly. 4444 The final choice that Erik made, that impacted Paul was when Erik slapped Pauls's friend, Tino across the face.

In the story, their choices affect Paul by causing him to have low self esteem, fearing his brother and feeling isolated. A choice made by Paul’s mom drops Paul’s confidence very rapidly. Her reluctance to be strict with her eldest son cause Paul to not be assertive enough. Throughout the novel, readers can point out that Paul is very similar to prey, while Erik acts like the hungry predator. “Luis had been killed by Arthur Bauer on Tuesday, but it had taken six days for him to die.” (247) Erik made this choice because Luis made fun of him. “You would smack a little kid in the face, right? Why don't you come over here and smack me?” (211) “I remained frozen in my spot as he got back in the Ford and drove off.”

While waiting for Nathan in the other room, Erik heard the murder happen. He was shocked and did not have time to react or stop it. After the murder, Erik and a friend Brett helped Nathan clean up the crime scene. Now what got Erik life in prison, was the “confession” of Brett. Claiming that Erik also helped with the murder, he was then arrested on murder charges also.
