The Balkans (former Yugoslavia): Christians and Muslims
The area known as the Balkans is an area on the peninsula of the southeastern Europe continent. The countries that make up the Balkans today consist of Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia Herzegovina. Some historians consider Croatia as a part of this region. Most of these countries share similar characteristics such as many years of association with the ruling of the Ottoman Empire. The Balkans was once conquered and ruled by the Ottoman Turks for different periods after the 1300’s.As a result of the Ottoman Empire the Muslim faith was the religion in the area.*

These protest come as a result of the economic difficulties and the instabilities in Bosnia. All though it has been an independent country for twenty it years it remains a less developed country. The main problems the protestors have with their government is its unstable economy. Unemployment rates fluctuate between 27.5% and 44%, it’s the highest unemployment rate in europre.one fifth of the population lives under the property line. Today Muslims make up 48.8% of the population of Bosnia while Serbian orthodox is 31.5%.The smallest religion is roman catholic with 13.1%.The war of the Balkans in the 1990’s destroyed the social relationships of Bosnian societies ,pitting neighbor against neighbor in a place of violence, uneasiness ,and fear.it is hard to characterize interpersonal relationships in Bosnia.
