1.0 INTRODUCTION The workplace of today is ever changing. This report highlights the influences which have shaped the job market of today’s society and how further evolution will require workers skill sets to adapt further in order to keep up with employers needs and avoid widening the skill gap. These skill deficiencies are becoming more apparent as the skill set required by employers continues to shift due to technological advances, the impact of the economy and globalisation which will be discussed within the report. 2.0 METHODOLOGY For the benefit of this report, both primary and secondary evidence has been gathered in order to support findings. Initially secondary research was gathered within a group, as detailed in meeting minutes contained in the appendix, leading to creating a survey to verify conclusions which was completed by fellow students. The findings are discussed throughout the report and can be found in the appendix. 3.0 FINDINGS 3.1 EMPLOYERS PAST NEEDS At the end of the 1700’s, manufacturing in Britain expanded on an astonishing scale known today as the industrial revolution. Redcar steel works has been operating in the UK since 1917 and has recently announced its closure and the loss of 2,200 jobs due to the cost of producing steel within the UK being higher than the selling price. It has been reported that steel is currently cheaper to buy from china, mostly down to their lower labour costs, putting the UK out of business.
