My most memorable moment as a student occurred on my first day of school in the outskirts of Cicero, Indiana, when my teacher asked for my name. Despite this simple request, I failed to articulate my response in English to her and instead mumbled an incoherent mess. As I struggled, I heard laughter from my classmates and felt ashamed of my verbal shortcomings.A language barrier developed as I attempted in vain to communicate with my peers. Although some classmates were amiable and receptive, others ridiculed me for my inept English abilities, resulting in relentlessly bullying. Her dedication to teach me English instilled in me a sense of gratitude and appreciation for literature as I began to take interest in classic novels such as The Great Gatsby. As I searched for volunteering opportunities to expand my experience. In my search, I discovered Literacy Green Bay, a local literary organization that served ESL immigrant children. I immediately realized that this was my opportunity to reciprocate the late and weary spent with my teacher learning English and became a tutor. As I tutored these children, I sympathized and understood their verbal and reading struggles, reminding myself of my own challenges as a English learner. I sensed their frustrated confusion provoked by the intricacies of English and explained these complexities in terms that I, a former English learner, could understand. The moment when the student correctly and accurately enunciates a word transcends any other rewards or incentives that could be offered. The gift of language my teacher bestowed to me is one of the greatest blessings that I have received and I aim to share it with students like myself that has endured the challenge of learning a language. Furthermore, this gift of language has allowed me to communicate with my peers and has ultimately strengthened my pursuit to achieve the American
