Applying To College Reading And Writing Strategies

From explaining a concept, to justifying an evaluation, and to analyzing stories it all starts with reading strategies. Reading strategies consist of strategies, which will help you apply to college reading and with writing papers. The first important strategy is annotating. Annotations is when we underline, highlight, or comment on a page referring to a quote, phrase, or argument we find important or has a purpose. With annotations it makes outlining easier as outlining is identifying the main ideas. Strategies like paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing go along with outlining and annotations as well. Paraphrasing is restating a text in your own words. Summarizing is saying the main ideas of the text in your own words. Synthesizing is presenting ideas and information form sources. I have learned previously about paraphrasing and summarizing, yet remembering the difference between the two is sometimes a struggle. Synthesizing is a bit new to me. I did not know putting your own ideas and information into your paper from sources was called that. There are three things to do in order to successfully explain a concept well. First, it is important to create closure by addressing the reader directly. Second, there should be comparison and contrasts helps with learning new concepts. Lastly, using evidence from a source to support a claim is important as well as citing it correctly and showing how the evidence supports the claim. For example, Anastasia Toufexis, the author of “Love: The Aright Chemistry”, portrays these very well in her material. Toufexis begins with, “O.K. let’s cut out all this nonsense about romantic love”, then ends with “O.K. that’s the scientific point of view. Satisfied?” (129,132). Here, Toufexis addresses the readers by repeating the word “O.K.” bringing attention directly to the
