Drunk driving is defined as the crime of driving a vehicle with excess of alcohol is in the blood. In the current it means getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated and no reprimands are given just a slap of the wrist and a fine. In 2012 Kirk Camacho lost his youngest daughter to a drunk driver with a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit.
However, “90% of drunk driving deaths in the United States were found in the over 21 age group” (Gruenewald). For this reason, drunk driving is not directly correlated with the drinking age. In addition, the percent of drunk driving deaths in the United States has reduced at a slower rate than European countries where they have their legal drinking age at eighteen. This suggest that if lowering the drinking age was a success in Europe, it may also be effective here in the United States to diminish the amount of drunk driving deaths. This is because people that become injured due to alcohol or alcohol poisoning are afraid to report their injuries to the hospital or authorities out of fear of illegal consequences for underage drinking.
As frequently as drunk driving happens, there is now a faster and easier way to reduce the number of lives lost by using breathalyzers in vehicles. Many states already implement the mandatory use of an ignition interlock device after someone has been found guilty of drunk driving. Over the years, the legal drinking age in the United States has been heavily debated. The picture is of a car upside down on a highway with big white letter going across the picture that says “i’m just buzzed” which indicated that the driver thought he was okay to drive after he was drinking.
