Many individuals discourage engaging in physical therapy but tend to forget the amount of beneficial impacts it has. The two contrasting experiences shared by PCC students regarding physical therapy highlight the importance of finding the right approach to therapy. As one student mentioned, they had gone to physical therapy for their back but found it ineffective. They explained, “I think physical therapy could be beneficial but it just wasn't for me.” While another student who partook in physical therapy mentioned “I would have not been able to continue playing sports… it was a great experience”(Wheeler). It is widely recognized that athletes who are anxious or fearful about re-injury have a higher risk of actually getting injured again. Such athletes can benefit from “a functional progression in their rehabilitation…carefully planned and step-by-step manner…abilities and confidence are restored…ability to perform required tasks with confidence” (Kegerreis). These pieces of evidence show that physical therapy is not limited to just improving range of motion and muscular strength. Instead, functional progression in athletic rehabilitation is essential for restoring and maintaining an athlete’s physical abilities and confidence in a safe manner. Traditional clinical settings may not always result in the complete restoration of athletic abilities, making it important for therapists to safely apply the specific stresses of different activities while considering the patient’s limitations.
