In William Deresiewicz’s essay “The Neoliberal Arts- How College Sold its Soul to the Market” he presents an argument that higher education is driven mainly by the market, and that students are pursuing majors that promise future financial gain over knowledge. The essay “How College Sold its Soul to the Market” was published in Harper’s Magazine in September of 2015. Deresiewicz argues that we are living in a neoliberalism environment and that with mass higher education students are interested in becoming leaders and money makers instead of valuing the importance of learning how to think intellectually; neoliberalism is an ideology that reduces all values to money values. Deresiewicz argues throughout his essay that there are three potential purposes for higher education: the commercial (preparation for a career), the cognitive (learning things, learning how to think), and the moral (determining your own beliefs and becoming an independent thinker).
Thanksgiving Traditions With Thanksgiving right around the corner, people are daydreaming about all the amazing food they’re going to eat. Mashed potatoes, stuffing, pie and of course turkey! Not only are people thinking about food, they can’t wait to get back to their Thanksgiving traditions. Zach Fisher (9) runs the Turkey Trot 5K in Cedar Rapids every year with his mom and stepdad. He has participated in it since he was little and doesn’t remember a time he lost to his family.
The First Thanksgiving Everyone knows about Thanksgiving and eating turkey and pie, with a little cranberry sauce. Even though that is not what the pilgrims and Indians really did on the first Thanksgiving. Most elementary schools teach about how the pilgrims and Indians were friends. That they wore nice clothing, and ate at a giant table all together with a cornucopia in front of them.
Thanksgiving is slowly becoming just another shopping day and retailers are saying that they are just doing what the shoppers want. Whether or not the stores should be open on Thanksgiving has been becoming a more heated topic. Articles 1,2, and 3 covered this very topic. However, articles 1 and 2 have a strong argument against the stores being open with good facts and statistics. Article 3 is very opinionated and rambles on and on.
Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is the most stimulating holiday. There is an extreme amount of food to see, smell and taste, along with emotions associated with seeing family. The whole feeling of Thanksgiving is warmer and different than most holidays. Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and siblings stand in a circle around a table laden with food. Black Thursday or the Holiday formerly known as Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is a holiday that is about giving thanks for what we have. It’s history goes back to the Pilgrims who celebrated the “First Thanksgiving” with the Native Americans who had helped them get through their first winter in America by sharing their knowledge of how to live off the land. People are taught this as a child and their are many children specials dedicated to teach these values. People are taught to give to others as well as to give thanks for what we have. People are also taught to come together as a family and to enjoy the holiday, bring a feeling of togetherness to the occasion.
For the green bean casserole, the blanched green beans are bathed in a mushroom cream sauce that is made with diced onions, cremini mushrooms and heavy cream. This mixture is transferred to a foil baking pan that is covered and refrigerated. The roasted sweet potatoes are mashed and blended into a vanilla custard then poured over chunks of day old French bread for a delicious sweet potato bread pudding. The crumbled cornbread is mixed with sautéed onion, celery and bell pepper. I season it with ground sage, salt and pepper.

These holidays share many similarities concerning the gifts & memories they provide to thousands every year & yet contrast each other in worldwide appreciation. Both holidays represent the union of family, charity, and gratitude. Upon reaching adulthood, children tend to leave the comfort and security of their parents’ home in order to establish their own lives; however, they always return home during Christmas and Thanksgiving to spend time with their families. The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are similar in that they both abound with colorful decorations specific to their themes.
