Argumentative Essay: Affirmative Action In Schools

Over the years affirmative action has been a hotly-debated topic inquiring the futures of how colleges integrate people of color and increase diversity. Originally a system to help educate African-Americans during the 1960s, affirmative action was intended to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups and women. But today, affirmative action is disputed. Instead of promoting diversity in race, I believe students should be judged on merit. The United States’ government should not allow affirmative action to continue because it contributes to segregation and discrimination.

In such a liberal “diversity” promoting environment, people forget that with no affirmative action, it will lead to students being admitted due to their merits and effort, rather than race. This guarantees that if person works hard, whether a poor girl working a job to support her family and gets B’s or a rich boy who works extra hours on his homework every day, they will get the same chance, whether they are black, white, asian, or indian.

For example, a minority student with a 3.0 GPA gets placed in an 4.0 GPA class. The 4.0 GPA students has better merit and is quicker to learn new material, as seen by their consistent, high scores throughout their high school years, while the 3.0 GPA student have less consistent scores due to any number of reasons. The 3.0 GPA student might feel insignificant or worse than their peers, and will likely unmotivated to do the classwork, causing them to ultimately drop out. Even if the 3.0 student is hardworking, the college curriculum might be too hard for the unprepared 3.0 GPA student. Affirmative action demotivates students with potential and those with merit will be unprepared for the courses. Affirmative action is not
