We all have this perfect picture of what American farming is until we go do some research. Industrial agriculture has shifted it all around. In the early 19Th century after world war II , “Industrial animal agriculture or industrial livestock production was introduce which is a modern form of intensive farming that refers to the industrialized production of livestock, including cattle, poultry (in "battery farms") and fish. In concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) animals are crammed together and kept and raised in confined situations. Most of the meat, dairy and eggs available in supermarkets are produced by industrialized agriculture” (Intensive animal farming). Diversified farming is the practice of producing a variety of crops or animals, or both, on one farm, as distinguished from specializing in a single commodity. (Dictionary.com ) The total opposite of the style animals are living today in confinements. Can you just imagine yourself leaving with hundreds or even thousands of other people packed all together in a room, just like humans animals become irritated from being so close to each other all the time. The factories had to come up with solutions to avoid injuries among the animals. As Arora Namit a vegetarian said in the article On Eating Animals: “To reduce fights and injuries due to overcrowding, animals began to be routinely mutilated-for instance, their beaks, horns, or tails might be chopped of burned off without anesthesia- and they were often confined in tiny crates in windowless rooms”. Even though these procedures are so inhumane it is legal. The chicken’s peaks had to be cut off because they would peck, kill and eat each other in the cages. The cows will also injure each other in the confinements if they got irritated do to the small amount of space they have. There should be no reason why animals should live so harsh life. If we do not address the issues everyone will be suffering the consequences, not just the animals. Think about it, if the animals are getting sick because of the poor sanitation what would happen is that they will be constantly receiving antibiotics that can affect the people who consume the meat. Also having the animals all cramped up into each other in the confinements as well increase chance of animals getting sick. The farmers try to make their jobs easier but in a way they are also making it harder because once the animals become stress and irritated in the confinements they have to start mutilating animal’s parts that are causing the harm among each other. For example the chicken’s peak, the cow’s horns and the pigs tails. Just imagine the farmers having to cut every single chicken peak in a cage. That would take forever. Changing the laws to encourage the growth of diversify farming would just be the best solution to all this problems. Producing a variety of crops or animals, or both on one farm will perfectly work together as a team making the food healthier as I said before.
