Colorado was the first state to legalize marijuana to be sold as recreational use. However, this decision had not been made over night. For years Colorado residents have lobbied and discussed possible ways to legalize marijuana and the benefits for medical uses. But unfortunately there have been a number of issues that have started to become a growing concern with young children and adolescents. These issues can range from minor ingestion and calling poison control to rush children to emergency rooms due to major unintentional consumption of marijuana. Since becoming legal to sell and use marijuana recreationally for adults the state has exploded with marijuana use and the use of marijuana edibles. Schools should educate about why the drug is bad and why someone should not use it. When I was in middle school and high school I had health classes that touched on why marijuana was bad, but all the teachers would ever say is that it is bad, illegal and that you should not use it. We were never taught about how it will affect us and change us. For the packaging of the marijuana edibles, companies need to make packages harder to open. Soda edibles need to have a child resistant cap to prevent accidental consumption of the regular looking soda. Also, there should be stricter laws on the sale of edibles to people, maybe even require the purchaser to consume the product in the store, that way there would be no way of a child eating it. If society, mainly adults want to use marijuana then that is their choice, however adults need to keep it away from children! Children do not understand the big picture of the dangers of this drug and need to be taught it.
