Medical Marijuana for Children Medical Marijuana for children is an ongoing issue, it will take some time for laws to be put in place for the use of medical marijuana in children. The DEA believes that medical marijuana should stay as a schedule 1 drug because it has the highest potential for abuse. The DEA also finds no medical value for medical marijuana. There is no medical research that medical marijuana is addictive, and bad for the brain, consequently nonscientific research shows that medical marijuana has healing use. The strict status of medical marijuana proves to be problematic in doing scientific research. The schedule 1 status was enforced in the 1970's. During the 1960's and 70's there was a lot of recreational use of marijuana. The perception of marijuana has not been a good one in the public eye. During this era in Berkeley, California the movement of peace, love and harmony plus the use of marijuana, was very popular, moreover this did not do well for the perception of marijuana. In 1974 Sen James Eastland, D-Miss stated that if marijuana continued to spread like it did in Berkley the nation would be looking at an epidemic of zombies. After the statement made by Eastland, there was a 20-year campaign of " say no to drugs".
