Should Marijuana be legal in the United States?
One of the major pressing concerns in the United States is the legalization of marijuana. Some Americans argue that if the government makes marijuana legal, citizens will compromise their physical and mental wellbeing and that crime rates increase in the areas where it has been legalized. Whereas, other people claim that the legalization of marijuana will promote the development of the society as well as reduce the chances for crime.

The author of the article, Alfredo Carpineti, writes, “According to a new study, smoking high-potency cannabis can significantly damage white matter, which is responsible for connecting different areas of the brain” (IFLScience.com). The data revealed showed that “white matter damage was significantly greater among heavy users” when compared “to occasional or low-potency users.” In other words, high-potency marijuana can cause dangerous damage to the white matter in people’s brains. This damage increases the “risk of a psychotic disorder” and poses significant mental health risks.
