The supposed proposal where the White House would provide free education for students enrolled in community colleges nationwide is enticing to many students, and some turn to community colleges to reduce the burden of student loans and other accumulating miscellaneous fees such as textbooks, lab materials, and more. According from the White House government official website, the “America’s College Promise” proposal is to have two free years of community college with the condition of having a 2.5 GPA for students and attend college at least half time with a role “to increase the number of college graduates and prepare those graduates to lead the 21st century” (“FACT Sheet”). Some of the language that I would like to see it amended would be its address on the multiple criticisms and concerns such as how state funds would be allocated when funding this proposal, and suggest ways as to how involved the federal government should be involved in public and or private education. In addition, I would like to see how the federal and state government address the quality of education such as addressing students who have remedial scores on subjects and possibly amend the core curriculum in majors or even addressing free online courses such as MIT’s free courses. Fran Cubberley, although fancied the idea of free tuition, pointed out that it “will not cover the cost of educating and serving students, and senior management and the boards of trustees [that would] need to adopt creative financial strategies to maintain quality services and instruction” (Cubberley 22-23).
