The Confederate flag represents different meanings, for different people. Not all the meanings are good, and not all of them are true. Some people may view the flag as a representation of racism, and a harsh time period for African Americans. However, that was not the intended meaning for the Confederate flag. Other people view the flag as an important symbol of our history and the past, that should not be taken away or destroyed. The Confederate flag and other memorials relating to the flag and army, are a part of our past whether people like it or not. Banning the flag would just be trying to block out part of history, that we cannot change. By ignoring the past, repeating it is inevitable. The memorials are an important symbol to the soldiers’ families. Taking the memorials down would be disrespecting the sacrifices they made for their country and beliefs. Everyone has different beliefs, and everyone should be able to celebrate those beliefs freely. Public places such at schools and parks should not be renamed just because people believe its racist. However, they can be renamed after more recent historic heroes, if the community feels the need too. Historic landmarks are here to honor history and the people who made it possible. Schools such as Robert E. Lee high school have the right to be named after him. He was a war hero for the confederacy, and he deserves the right to be honored even if not everyone can see that or agree with what he did for this country. If other people groups can have up monuments that not everyone agrees with, then the south and confederates should be able to also. Since people such as Martin Luther King Jr are allowed to have statues up and them not be taken down, then people like Robert E. Lee should be able to as well. By taking down the monuments all we are doing is destroying the past, but we will never be able to destroy history and what happened in
