Many in American society view guns as evil and harmful rather than as a safety net. The issue of gun control has been extremely troublesome in America for decades. Gun control is a strict set of laws that regulate the manufacture, sale, distribution, transfer, and possession of firearms by citizens of a country. Places like the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Japan have extremely strict gun laws. In places like the United States, France, and Italy they have less strict laws. To this day, politicians in America can not come to an agreement on this issue. On the one hand, Democrats and the left argue for strict gun control that limits an individual's access to firearms to ensure safety and security of our citizens. Gun Ownership is a fundamental right as an American, so educating our youth on gun ownership is how we should address this problem so America is a safe country for all. Background checks are needed to legally buy a firearm. However, many firearms used in robberies have been bought off of the black market or were stolen during burglaries, so background checks don't stop criminals from getting guns. According to the United States Constitution, under the Second Amendment, Americans have the fundamental right to bear arms. Therefore we also need to educate our youth about the safety of guns, and teach them that we shouldnt be afraid of guns. Rather, we should respect them and have them as a safety net for unforeseen circumstances. If we allow stricter gun laws, good American citizens will not be able to protect themselves. If we allow stricter gun laws we are also undermining the Constitution that has been in place for decades. The Sandy Hook Promise argues that gun control is needed because firearms are the leading cause of death among American children and teens. 1 out of 10 gun deaths are age 19 or younger (“Facts”). While this may be true, it is a fact that of the 32,000 people who are killed by guns 17,000 of them are at their own hands. Improving mental health help is how we combat America's gun issue. 1/7 teens struggle with a mental health disorder that is being untreated. According to Michigan Medicine "Untreated mental health disorders can have a debilitating impact on children's healthful growth and throughout their transition to adulthood," (Mostafavi). Many of our children have these untreated mental health disorders. When they go to school there is a lack of help to treat or even acknowledge these disorders. When children grow up to be adults and have an untreated mental health disorder it impacts their way of thinking. This is one reason we see so often that students from past years come back to their old schools and cause immense havoc. In order to stop this from happening we must improve our mental health system in schools and in public places. Instead of taking away guns from law abiding citizens we need to create programs and better the systems we have in place for mental health
