A writer, Elizabeth Warren quotes, “We lose children and teenagers to gun violence every day. If a virus suddenly started killing our children every day, America would mobilize teams of doctors and health officials. We would move heaven and earth until we found a way to protect our children. But not with gun violence”. This quote describes American’s hesitation to put restrictions on guns and gun use. If there was a dangerous disease hurting everyone, the government would do everything in their power to stop it. However, when it comes to the issue of gun violence, the government is dragging their feet. There is much violence in today’s society, such as the Las Vegas shooting, the Boston bombing, the Charleston church shooting, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and many other events. One example is that large acts of violence and terrorism often use guns and legal weapons. Another example is that many incidents occur from young children or inexperienced adults using guns. Finally, it would be safer if there was more gun control. Today, anyone can obtain a gun regardless of their background or histories. On the other hand, there are also many reasons why stricter gun control policies would be an issue. To begin with, stricter gun control policies would violate a second amendment right, and therefore would be unconstitutional. The second amendment states that citizens have the right to bear arms. Additionally, stricter gun control laws would not altogether prevent crimes from occurring. There are numerous types of crimes that can occur without the use of a gun. Lastly, guns help assist women and the elderly with defending themselves against aggressors. Some women and elderly may lack the strength to defend themselves against someone with a gun or someone very muscular.
