New national survey on aging from the Pew Research Centre, reported that most adults over age 50 feel at least 10 years younger than their actual age, the survey found. One-third of those between 65 and 74 said they felt 10 to 19 years younger, and one-sixth of people 75 and older said they felt 20 years younger. And at what age does old age begin? Most people in the survey said old age starts at age 68. Are they kidding? That seems way too young to me. Not surprisingly, most people over 65 have a different idea about old age. You are a day older today than you were yesterday. Most people would like to be younger than their chronological age. There is nothing wrong with ageing. It is the natural process of the human body and certainly cannot be arrested. It can, however, be done gracefully with every attempt made to remain independent and productive. It's hard to gauge the age I feel inside: the actual person I'm pretending to be has to recalibrate himself constantly. I learned some years ago that what is commonly called a mid-life crisis- was never felt in my life. Mine is a generation that believes it is the first to refuse to be circumscribed by middle age. We'll just carry on as before, we think, unhampered by respectability or decorum. I'm pretty certain every generation felt this way – at least with respect to the preceding generation – and thought it was the first to do so. But the restrictions you fear middle age will impose upon you simply aren't in place.
