Government funding has been a huge topic of discussion, especially when it comes to the argument as to whether or not the U.S. government should support the funding of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a “nonprofit organization that does research into and gives advice on contraception, family planning, and reproductive problems,” (Planned Parenthood). The current government, though, does not want to continue to support this service and ultimately wants to defund it. Many U.S. citizens do not agree with this decision, making this debate very popular. The argument of Planned Parenthood funding will become even more popular of a topic because of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and various celebrities.
The current president of the United States, Donald Trump, has stirred a lot of controversy within this topic. Firstly, Trump signed a bill in April 2017 that allows states to keep money from organizations that provide abortion services, such as Planned Parenthood (Merica). This action reversed a regulation made by Obama that prohibited things like this from happening. This was really the start this topic becoming so popular. This will not happen, though, because of the high level of women empowerment that the country is experiencing right now, and will continue to experience. For example, a recent movement was made, called Me Too. This prompted women to voice their opinions and speak for what they believe in, directly relating to how they feel about their healthcare rights and being in charge of their own bodies. Since Trump has continued to take away women’s healthcare rights, the longer Trump stays in office, the more this topic will be talked about. More people will become angry with the president taking away their services, leading to the argument of government funding being even more
