Stem cells have been used to treat more than 75 diseases. (What diseases can be treated using stem cells, 2012). In a stem cell transplant, embryonic stem cells are first specialized into the necessary adult cell type. Then those cells replace tissue that is damaged by disease or injury. Stem cell transplant can replace neurons damaged by spinal cord injuries, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease or other neurological problems. It can also produce insulin that could treat people with diabetes and heart muscle cells that could repair damage after a heart attack, or replace almost any tissue or organ that is injured or diseased. The main roles of adult stem cells in a living organism are to maintain and repair the tissue that they were found. The adult stem cells used to treat spinal cord injuries come from two places, the human’s own bone marrow and human umbilical cord tissue. Stem cells replace cells damaged by chemotherapy or disease or as a way for the donor's immune system to fight some types of cancer and blood related diseases. A few of these are that It shows great potential in the treatment of a number of conditions like Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, cancer, diabetes and many others. The stem cell therapy allows researchers to study the developmental stages that cannot be known directly through the embryo and can be used in the treatment of a number of birth defects, infertility problems and also pregnancy loss.
